My heart is aching this morning. I knew it was going to happen but I just didn't know how it was going affect me when I actually saw it for myself. Of course, this event I speak of is the ending of "Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince."
Before I divulge my thoughts on that subject matter, I just want to say I was blown away by this movie. Visually, it was by far the most stunning of the series. If you went back right now and watch SS and then watched HBP, SS would look like freaking child's play compared to this. The cinematography in this film was breathtaking. I would be shocked and surprised if this film was not nominated in the category for Best Cinematography at this year's Oscars. Emotionally, this movie was a roller coaster, but in a great way. You can always judge how great a film is just by listening to the reaction from the audience in the theater. During the funny and amusing parts, everyone was laughing. Quite hard at some parts. And when the movie took on a more serious subject matter, the theater was dead silence. Everyone was just breathing in the emotion and intrigue of the scene. I was sucked in from the very beginning and I didn't let go until the very end.
What kept this film going more than anything was the sheer acting genius of all involved. Dan, Emma, and Rupert have found there place in the acting world. Dan, more than anyone, really stepped it up in this film and was able to handle all the different emotions and really runaway with them. He shined as Harry and he really helped convince me that he truly is perfect for this role. Harry on Felix Felicis...classic!
Other characters who were stunning included Jim Broadbent as Slughorn. From the time he popped up from his "chair form" and said "MERLIN'S BEARD!", I knew he was going to be the perfect Slughorn. He was awkward, charming and arrogant in all the right places.
Alan Rickman, as usual, nailed Snape. In the book, it was hard for me to visualize Snape's stress and his emotional struggle as he faced the ultimate task at hand. But in the film it was much different. From the time he made the Unbreakable Vow with Narcissa, I truly felt for him. Of course, as someone who as read these books and knows why Snape is doing this, it made his struggle even harder to watch. He really played into that emotion and was able to really nail his role as double agent for Dumbledore. He is one of my favorite actors and he was amazing. I have a feeling it is going to be hard for me to watch some of his scenes in DH.
Evanna Lynch as Luna Lovegood, stunning. I really don't think they could have found anyone better to play this role.
Jessie Cave was spot on for Lavender Brown. She was super convincing and quite disturbing. She really played it up and made the whole "Won-Won and Lav-Lav" love connection that much more comical and annoying! Just the way it should be.
And of course, Michael Gambon as Albus Dumbledore. He was probably my shining star of this film. I hear people say all the time that Richard Harris (God rest his soul) was a much better Dumbledore. I just don't see that. Dumbledore in the books is really an emotional character. He can be angry when he needs to be angry and he really does have a great sense of humor. As far as Dumbledore being a mentor to Harry, yes, Richard Harris fit that part. But, he was very soft spoken and I don't know if he could have played up Dumbledore's sense of humor the way Gambon did. One of my favorite parts of this book was the Harry and Dumbledore interaction and Gambon really made this part of the movie standout. He played into all the right emotions and brought out the Dumbledore I expected to see. Anyone that knows me knows that he and Sirius are my favorite characters of this series and I am so glad that we got to see such an amazing portrayal of him on the big screen. Bravo Michael!
My discussion on the genius of Michael Gambon as Dumbledore takes me back to the beginning of my post. My emotional recovery this morning from seeing this film just last night. As Dumbledore being one of my favorite characters, his death is always earth shattering to me. Every time I read this book I am an emotional wreck after wards. From the time Harry and Dumbledore arrive at the cave until the very end, I was an emotional wreck in the theater. I knew what was coming. I just didn't know how bad it was going to affect me when I actually saw it take place. My imagination is one thing but seeing it happen on the screen with my own eyes only made it that much worse. The emotion and pleading by Dumbledore to Severus was heart-wrenching. It all kind of happened really quick but it worked. I was a little disappointed when I heard his funeral was not going to be included in the film but I think the scene with the wands said it all. It conveyed all the emotion that the funeral could have held. Honestly, I don't know if I would have made it through a funeral scene.
The part that gets me every time in the book, where I cry harder than any other part of this series, is the scene in Dumbledore's office after his death. Harry walks into the office and sitting behind Dumbledore's desk is his portrait with him sleeping soundly. (I am getting emotional just writing this.) I honestly thought they would not include this in the film. Part of me didn't want them to because for me, this is the proof that he really is dead. Well, there it was. As soon as Harry walked into the office I knew it was coming. I saw all of the other portraits on the wall asleep and I had to brace myself for what was to come. I have no words for the emotion that scene caused me. When the credits were rolling, I had to continue to sit in my seat to compose myself. And I am sure it will get me every time I see this movie.
I will conclude this long ass post with this, I have never seen a Harry Potter film more than once in the theater but I am ready right now to go watch this one again. Also, concerning DH, I can only hope that they put the emotion and feeling into the next 2 films that they did in this one. There are a lot of loses and tough moments throughout DH. I only hope they do them and the characters justice. I am sad that this series is almost over but I am glad that they have done such a great job portraying these characters on the big screen.
